Bitcoin Fog Creator Faces 12.5-Year Sentence for Illegal Crypto Mixing

Roman Sterlingov, the founder of Bitcoin Fog, received a 12.5-year prison sentence for his role in operating the notorious crypto mixer. Bitcoin Fog was a popular tool for criminals wanting to hide illicit funds. This sentence is part of the U.S. government's ongoing effort to target illegal crypto services.

Bitcoin Fog: A Hub for Criminal Activity

Bitcoin Fog wasn’t just a mixer. For over a decade, the service helped criminals obscure their transactions. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) claims Bitcoin Fog processed over 1.2 million Bitcoin, worth around $400 million at the time.

Criminals used Bitcoin Fog to cover their tracks, making the platform a major hub for money laundering. Sterlingov, convicted in March, faced charges of money laundering and operating an unlicensed business.

Despite his defense claiming he only used the service, not ran it, the jury found him guilty. Prosecutors had asked for a much longer sentence, up to 30 years. However, Sterlingov received 12.5 years behind bars.

A Warning to Other Mixers

This case will no doubt send a strong message to all crypto mixers. As commentator L0la L33tz noted, the government’s actions represent a direct attack on financial privacy.

While Sterlingov’s conviction is significant, many believe the billions he earned from Bitcoin Fog remain unaccounted for. The message is clear: Crypto mixers involved in illegal activity will face severe consequences.

As one crypto show put it, “This ain’t just a slap on the wrist – it’s a straight-up message to mixers: play shady, pay heavy.” The government has made it clear that operating outside the law will come with a high price.
